The Ministry of Education, via the Department of School Education and Literacy, has commenced online registration for the National Merit cum Means Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS).
For those in classes 9 and 12, registration for the NMMS scheme is open on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP) website at scholarships.gov.in. Ensure to complete the registration by November 30, 2023.

As per the details provided by the competent authority, students with a total annual parental income of Rs. 3,50,000 or less are eligible for the National Merit cum Means Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS).
To participate in the selection test for the NMMS scholarship, students must have secured a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent grades in their class 7 exams. Students belonging to SC and ST categories are granted a 5% relaxation in the minimum qualifying marks.
The notification outlines two stages of application verification on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The first level is conducted at the institution or school level by the Institute Nodal Officer (INO), tentatively scheduled for December 15. The second stage is overseen by the District Nodal Officer (DNO) and is expected to take place on December 30, 2023.
The ministry has declared the annual award of one lakh new scholarships to students in class 9. This scholarship extends to students in classes 10 to 12, provided they study in state government, government-aided, or local body schools.
Recipients of this scholarship receive an annual sum of Rs 12,000, deposited directly into their bank accounts via electronic transfer through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS) using the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) method.
Initiated in 2008 by the Ministry of Education, Government of India, the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) is a centrally sponsored scheme. It aims to provide scholarships to meritorious students from economically weaker sections to encourage them to pursue education at the secondary and higher secondary levels.
According to information from the Department of School Education and Literacy (DSEL), the NMMSS scheme awards 1 lakh scholarships annually to selected students in class 9. The scholarship amount is Rs. 12,000 per annum from April 1, 2017 (previously Rs. 6000 per annum). This scholarship is continued or renewed in classes 10 to 12 for students studying in State Government, Government-aided, and Local body schools.
